When to NOT Substitute Yarns + New Patterns for
Berroco Maya® and Berroco Mixer®

There are many reasons to substitute yarns—cost, availability, color options, etc. I've been known to substitute yarns a time or two myself. Occasionally those yarns are easy to swap out, but frequently it's a little harder. Substituting yarns in a smart way requires a lot of swatching (which should always be done anyway), and often leads to having to do a lot of math to rework the pattern because the gauge is just slightly off.

Norah Gaughan's Anhinga pattern from 2009, for example, was originally written for a 100% wool yarn that had fabulous drape but has since been discontinued. It's such a great pattern that we reworked it in Berroco Maya®, a lightweight blend of cotton and alpaca yarn, making Anhinga 2 a fantastic all-season sweater. Wear it over a tank in warm weather, or over a long sleeve shirt when it's colder. Best of all? Anhinga 2 is completely free—just scroll down to download your copy of Anhinga 2.

Looking for patterns that are more suited to spring or summer? We've got more patterns in Maya, as well as Berroco Mixer®, in Booklet #373 Summer Days. Maya provides a gorgeous, slightly textured fabric, while Mixer adds a bit of sophisticated bling to simple, stylish projects. Be sure to flip through the lookbook for Summer Days to peek at all the patterns a little more closely!
