Colorful variations on easy knitting stitches

Odds are you've knit a feather-and-fan stitch pattern at some point in your knitting life.
It's one of the easiest eyelet stitches out there and creates a beautiful stitch pattern that's recognizable. This week's free pattern, Penelope, uses this simple combination of eyelets and decreases, but with a pop of color for a fun effect.
Penelope is a cowl knitting pattern that is knit flat and then seamed. The cream shade of Berroco Ultra® Wool DK is used to work the yarnovers and decreases in stockinette stitch, while two other shades are worked in a welt stitch to create the color ridges. This would be a great choice for an experienced knitter who just needs a simple project to work on, or for a beginner knitter who wants to experiment with lace.
A few years ago, Emily made a video demonstrating how to work a basic feather and fan stitch—follow along to see how to work the easy lace section.
