Boxing Day is celebrated the day after Christmas in the United Kingdom as well as Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Stories about the origin and meaning of the holiday are varied, but the emergent theme is one of charity. The titular box was made of clay and was used as a donation receptacle for employees. The clay bank was smashed on Boxing Day and the spoils were split between employees--an early version of the Christmas bonus.
Knitters are generally a very generous group and scarves are at the top of the most requested item list. I love stripes and noticed that the more colors you use, the better it looks. My strategy here was to choose a neutral I loved and add lots of accent shades that are similiar in value. Creating a men's version of the stripe sequence was a snap—I simply replaced Pimpernel, a vivid magenta, with Olive, a handsome herbaceous green. I used a fringe twister to add some interest and hide yarn ends at the same time. Popular with weavers, the little tool makes it a cinch to create gorgeous fringe and it's a lot more fun than weaving in yarn ends.
Comfort™ is a fantastic easy care yarn and creating a color combination is easy with the wide palette. You will have so much left over yarn from this scarf that you can easily use it for a Boxing Day charity project. Perhaps you can knit a second scarf for a local charity or one of the charitable organizations found on our Links
page.
Have a great time continuing the Boxing Day (and knitterly) tradition of giving to others.
